THE FORGOTTEN SIDE OF WWII STILL UNKNOWN TO THE WESTERN WORLD.

The epic WWII struggle on the Eastern Front is broken down into 16 easy to read chapters, covering the seasonal fighting that raged in Eastern Europe between the summer of 1941 to the spring of 1945. Follow the armies of Nazi Germany and her Axis allies as they ran roughshod over the Soviet Union for two long years before the Red Army turned the tide of battle against the invaders and ended the war in Europe among the ruins of Berlin. See how the Western Allied coalition came together to defeat Hitler’s war machine and then ultimately fell apart with the ideological divide between democracy and communism which inevitably led to the 50 year Cold War that catapulted the USA and USSR to the top as the world’s first global military and economic superpowers.

16 Seasons in Hell The Definitive Western Account of The WWII Campaign on The Eastern Front eBook Daniel Bennett

If you've ever read Alan Clark's Barbarossa, David Glantz & Jonathan House's When Titans Clashed or Evan Mawdsley's Thunder in the East, all widely acclaimed historical texts on the Eastern Front campaign, then I would highly recommend Bennett's book. Although he is not the common WWII literary fixture as the others', (this is his first full-length historical novel), Bennett writes with an easy-to-read flare that keeps the reader riveted to the words and comfortably draws out the historical events of the day and assimilates them into the main military campaigning plot. Readers are served up two diverse and seemingly distinct versions of the war; one that mixes the military drama of battle and the other that sways into the far off realms of the political world of the Western Allied capitals. This is where Bennett's illustration of the war differs from the others, as it is one of the first novels on the Eastern Front that prescribes a wholly western slant to the campaign. Thus the reader is brought continuously to and from, the major allied and Axis capitals in each chapter before giving way to the major military events of the season.

The title refers to the sixteen seasons of battle that was fought on the Eastern Front and that is how the book is broken down. Each chapter corresponds roughly to a different season of fighting on the Eastern Front, which makes the story so much more fascinating to understand because it does not waft far into the future or slide deep into the past. The writer keeps the reader captivated on the present events of the time and keeps you there without any detours back or forward in time. Each particular chapter is interwoven with the military events in the east and the relevant political events in the west, although the writer does raise pertinent military issues in the west and sometimes in the Pacific, in order to correlate the mood of the western governments with their not-so-cordial friend and ally in Moscow. But every major military event on the Eastern Front is covered in detail, from Barbarossa to the Moscow counterattack, the drive to the Caucasus and Stalingrad and the seizing of the momentum by the Red Army after Kursk and its subsequent advance into Berlin and Vienna. Yet the writer is quite adept at absorbing the more brutal and immoral aspects of the fighting in the east and he is careful to remain neutral in differentiating the separate and multiple atrocities that each side committed in the savage, life and death struggle between fascism and communism. The Nazi's sinister plan to denigrate and destroy Judaism and their insufferable persecution of the Slavs is explored somewhat in detail, without moving too far off the main plot. But equal consideration is also given to the Soviet's own repulsive mistreatment of the German civilians and all the other people that suffered in Poland, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria when the Red Army filled the vacuum left by the retreating Wehrmacht.

As the book nears its finale, the chapters get somewhat longer as the major events in Europe begin to overwhelm the Nazi's and their client states. Now the reader is brought closer to the action in Western Europe, as the Western Allied armies begin to advance out of Normandy and begin to converge with the Red Army on Hitler's center of power. The last chapter finally attempts to blend the allied armies together and reaches into the heart of the political differences that quickly caused the allied coalition to break down after Hitler's defeat. If there is one drawback to the book it is that it did not provide the traditional photo section, like most military history books and we thought the campaign maps could have been somewhat enlarged. Other than that, we love this book simply for its sheer attention to detail and its precise illustration of the relevant combat formations that played a main part in the fighting. Obviously it was well researched and nothing seems out of line with the interpretations of Keegan, Glantz, Clark or Beevor and all the other writers who delved into this particularly forgotten side of WWII to the western world. There are no ground-breaking new revelations or contentious new slants on the subject, just an intricately detailed synopsis of the history of that violent struggle and its effect on the formation and later disintegration of the allied alliance. This is a tremendous read and a must for any WWII aficionado to have on his or her bookshelf and a great source of information and reference because of its easy to comprehend, chronological time structure. It's also a great starter book for someone who may have just taken up interest in learning about the Eastern Front because its easy-to-ingest compilation makes the reader fully aware of everything that is going on in the world at the time and not just on the battlefront. We would highly recommend this book to any military aficionado, history student, soldier, officer or veteran.
